Created 'Diving Through Corals,' an interactive data physicalization installation that visualizes coral bleaching through an immersive experience.

Project Overview

As part of my Creative Technology bachelor’s studies, I worked with a team of 12 students to create Diving Through Corals, a data physicalization installation highlighting the phenomenon of coral bleaching. Data physicalization transforms data into tangible, physical forms that engage multiple senses, making complex information more accessible and immersive for users.

Our goal was to design an immersive and interactive experience that would engage visitors. The installation was designed as a submarine-like room, where visitors would encounter a wall of 3D-printed coral models representing different reef states across decades. Using motion tracking, visitors could “swim” through the years, witnessing the corals change color under UV light based on real-world data. A crank mechanism allowed users to explore the relationship between CO₂ emissions and ocean acidification bleaching, making the experience both interactive and informative.

My Contributions

  • Co-Team Leadership: Focused on communication and coordination of tasks across the team, managed project milestones, and ensured deadlines were met.
  • Visual Design: Created the visual elements displayed on interactive projection screens and designed the installation’s aesthetic.
  • Building: Collaborated on the construction of the submarine structure and the painting of coral models, contributing to the hands-on assembly process.

Impact

  • Delivered an immersive installation that combined science, art, and interactivity, engaging audiences with environmental issues.
  • Took a lead role in ensuring the project’s success during the high-stress build phase, when unexpected technical and logistical challenges required quick prioritization and decision-making.
  • Addressed interpersonal challenges within the team by working closely with my co-team lead and fostering open communication to ensure a positive team dynamic.
  • Sparked a passion for interaction design, including how to create an intuitive and engaging user experience, as well as the importance of attention to detail in crafting immersive environments.
