Project Overview
Developed as part of my Creative Technology studies, Alan AI was a project commissioned by our external client, Jordi Möllering. As part of his theater company, Jordi envisioned how artificial intelligence could fit into the theatrical space, imagining an AI actor capable of engaging audiences through dynamic and interactive performances. Our team of five students had full creative freedom to bring this vision to life.
The result was Alan, a spherical robot capable of dynamic movement, customizable light patterns, voice interaction, and even a built-in smoke machine—all controlled via a remote for seamless integration into live shows.
My Contributions
- Concept Ideation: Played a key role in brainstorming Alan’s design and functionalities, ensuring alignment with the theatrical vision.
- User Research: Conducted user research to refine Alan’s system, making interactions engaging and intuitive.
- Compact Component Design: Designed laser-cut parts to house internal systems efficiently.
- Problem Solving: Collaborated with the team to address technical challenges, especially in compacting multiple systems within a spherical design.
- Interface Development: Designed the remote-control interface for seamless operation during performances.
Impact
- Delivered a fully functional prototype that successfully debuted as an AI actor on stage.
- A year later, we were commissioned again by Jordi Möllering to develop an improved second iteration, enhancing Alan’s durability and performance.
- Alan AI continues to tour with De Eenzamen Theatre Company, now featuring three AI actors performing across the Netherlands and Belgium.
- Gained hands-on experience in user research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and pushing the boundaries of robotics and human-robot collaboration in creative spaces.
